1926 Miami hurricane: Florida's turning point to economic depression
South Florida and Miami have always been a place where people from Northern states wanted to live, however before the 1920's most that settled in Miami were retirees and those with wealth.
That all change in the mid 1920's with what was known perhaps as the first Florida land boom. It was fueled by developers and speculators from across the country.
In 1925, investors began to hear negative reports about Florida investment scams and shady development deals. This along with other factors may have slowed the growth of Miami but it was the hurricane of 1926 that was "Florida's Turning Point to Economic Depression".
